Queenstown, Milford Sound, & Slope Point
Last Sunday, Meg, Carolin, Deirdre, and I headed to the airport to fly to Christchurch, where we rented a car through Jucy and drove down to Queenstown to stay for a few days!
We went to the Below Zero Ice Bar that night for an hour. We thought about attempting to break the record of 3 hours and 33 minutes, but it wasn’t possible. We returned to the famous Fergburger after that.
The next morning, Carolin, Deirdre, and I headed for Milford Sound. Meg went, too, but she had a charter bus take her through her program for free. We ended up on the same cruise anyway. I was pulled over for going 62km in a 100 after I had been driving for no more than 20 seconds, and right in front of a 100km speed limit sign. Somehow there’s nothing on record though, so I’m not paying my fine.
The Jucy ship had a Pita Pit inside, which was primo! We went all the way through the fjord to the open ocean and then headed back. The water was a brilliant bright blue the whole time, natural waterfalls everywhere, huge, gorgeous mountains rising directly out of the water, and seals! It was super cold, however. The further south you go (especially in winter) the colder it is. It was between 0 and 2 degrees for most of the trip (30-34 fahrenheit).
We hung out at a few bars that night and had dinner at a quant little stone cottage that served pizza. Looked like it came right out of the French Revolution. Expensive though! And 15% more because it was the Queen’s Birthday (even though it wasn’t ACTUALLY her birthday…)
We spent the next day in Queenstown. We went to Arrowtown for a bit, which we also visited on our last visit to Queenstown.
The following day, Meg and I drove down to Slope Point, the southernmost point of the South Island of New Zealand. Nothing lies beyond it except Antarctica. The winds from Antarctica are so strong that the trees naturally grow slanted. After a two hour stroll around, we headed back. We did some shopping in Queenstown and had Fergburger again.
We headed back Thursday morning! Back in Wellington now for another full day. Wednesday morning, I leave for Sydney! I have my room entirely packed and it’s really empty. Have to get ready for goodbyes. D:
Next stop: Australia!
