St. Patrick's Day & VUWTC Freshers Tramp

The weekend of the 14th-16th was supposed to be the Fresher’s Trip, but due to the flop of a cyclone, Lusi, it was rescheduled for this past weekend. I went out on Friday night with Meg, Carolin, & Karin (Team South Island, we are called) and stayed out for several hours. I spent the remainder of the weekend inside, watching Game of Thrones, due to the weather.

MONDAY was St. Patrick’s Day. This was the first time I have been able to appropriately celebrate my Irish roots. And I did it well. We started the night at Molly Malone’s, went to Kitty O'Shea’s, and ended at J.J. Murphey’s, all of which, obviously, Irish pubs. I had a few glasses of Guinness, my first ever Irish car bomb (Guinness with a shot of Jameson and a shot of Bailey’s. Must chug before the Bailey’s curdles), and (?????) shots of Jameson. Things are spotty, but it was an excellent night and most of my good international friends came out, and even some kiwi friends! I also got a few numbers…

Wednesday night we went out for 2 for 1 margarita and BYO wine night at Caliente with a big group. Also an excellent time.

Freshers was last weekend and it was an amazing trip! There were 120 trampers (11ish from Massey, the rest from Vic). We took the bus to Tararua Forest Park, about an hour and a half north of Wellington, on Friday night and camped out. We left early on Saturday on a 5ish hour hike up, down, and all around some mountains. We finally reached a big flat area of tall grass in the middle of the mountains where we camped out again. Everyone got exceptionally drunk. Let’s just say that I’ve skinny dipped in two rivers, deep in the mountains of Tararua.

Sunday, we left early again for a 6ish hour hike, mostly up a mountain, but abruptly down the mountain toward the end. Overall, we hiked 20k (13ish miles), saw some gorgeous sights, got my ass kicked, fell down a few times, and had a really fun weekend with some already established friends, while meeting some new ones.

Next stop: Tongariro Crossing!
