South Island, Part II
I’ve been back in Wellington for six days and, despite classes, they have been really exciting. We are playing a game called Assassins throughout my entire building that consists of “assassinating” your designated target with a water pistol. You also have someone looking for you and it’s exciting. I’ve survived through my third assassinator, but have yet to kill anyone. I also have a game of Heaven & Hell arranged for tomorrow, which I am stoked about. :D
A friend of mine from home whom I hadn’t seen for five years and I found out was studying in Christchurch visited Wellington on Monday and Meg and I went for dinner at Fidel’s with her and two of her friends. It was really cool to catch up with her in NEW ZEALAND!
I impulsively booked a flight to Christchurch that I found for $39 dollars because of the amazing price and then a bus to Queenstown for $20. Looks like I’m headed back to the South Island on June 1, whether or not someone comes with me!
SO ANYWAY, following the first half of my trip to the South Island, we visited Mount Cook, Rangitata, and Kaikoura.
Mount Cook
We left Queenstown early to drive to Mount Cook. Once there, we took a pretty neat, three hour hike through the mountains and eventually saw the base of the glacier, which was really neat. There were lots of low-lying clouds out that day, so we didn’t get to see Mount Cook in all of its beauty but it was still really neat
Rangitata
We left the next morning for Rangitata. On the way we stopped at a horse ranch for some people on the bus to ride horseback. There was a gorgeous cat outside that was also really friendly, up until I picked it up. It literally bit two holes in my hand that proved to hurt like a bitch for a long time. We did a nice little walk along a road down to a river and saw plenty of sheep (surprise) while others went rafting.
Kaikoura
We left the next day for Kaikoura, one of the sealife capitols of New Zealand. They have whale watching and swimming with dolphins (that cost a pretty penny), but I settled with checking out the sea pups in huge numbers that were playing in a few different places. I had to find a (creepy fucking) hospital for my cat bite to get a tetanus shot. We got blue cod fish and chips from the voted #2 fish and chips shop in New Zealand. DEVINE.
The next day we got up early, watched the sun rise over the East Coast, had breakfast, bussed back into Picton, and ferried back home.
